Sara Sheridan became the first recipient of the Revell Research Systems Prize in 2006, marking the beginning of what would become a long-standing tradition of recognising outstanding achievement in computing at the University of Plymouth. The prize was established by Exeter-based management and technology consultancy Revell Research Systems to celebrate its twenty-first year in business and to encourage excellence among students preparing to enter the IT profession.
The award was presented to Sara at a University of Plymouth degree ceremony held at Plymouth Guildhall on 27 November 2006. The presentation recognised her achievement as the top final-year student on the Foundation Degree in Internet Technology in Business and marked the inaugural presentation of the prize.
Sara's academic journey was both distinctive and impressive. Having already earned a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth, she later returned to higher education to pursue studies in computing. She enrolled at Exeter Business School at Exeter College, which delivered the Foundation Degree programme on behalf of the University, and graduated with outstanding results.
Commenting on the award, Alastair Revell praised Sara's abilities and highlighted the unique combination of technical and creative skills that she had developed through her studies. He expressed confidence that her background and determination would enable her to make a significant contribution to the IT industry and welcomed the fact that she would become the inaugural recipient of the newly established prize.
Sara's tutors also recognised her exceptional performance. Jim Marks described her as an outstanding student who joined the programme with no previous IT experience yet consistently achieved excellent results. Her commitment, enthusiasm and motivation were said to have inspired those studying alongside her and contributed positively to the wider learning environment.
The award marked the start of an exciting professional future. Shortly after graduation, Sara secured her first role in the technology sector with leading cybersecurity company Sophos at its Oxford headquarters. As the inaugural winner of the Revell Research Systems Prize, she set a high standard for all who would follow and established a legacy of achievement that continues to be celebrated by the University of Plymouth and Revell Research Systems today.
